Weather News

Windy, unsettled conditions continue

WINTER STORM WARNING will remain posted for the southern Beaverhead, Madison, and Gallatin counties until 8 a.m. Tuesday. Travel over mountain passes along the Idaho border will be difficult due to an accumulation of 4 to 8 inches of snow. Winds will create areas of reduced visibility due to blowing and drifting snow. Other passes such as Lost Trail, Lolo, Lookout, and Marias will see 3 to 6 inches through early Wednesday.

HIGH WIND WARNING for Beaverhead, Madison, and Gallatin counties. SW 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.  Sustained winds of 40 mph or gusts of 58 or more can lead to property damage.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for the Flathead, Mission, Missoula and Bitterroot Valleys until 11 a.m. Tuesday. Wet roads and freezing temperatures overnight will allow for the formation of black ice on primary and secondary roads. A band of light rain and snow will push through the region for the morning commute causing slippery conditions. Snow accumulations of a trace to 1 inch.

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY for Lookout, Lolo, and Lost Trail passes until 11 a.m. Wednesday. Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches for mountain passes with up to 2 inches in nearby valleys.

WIND ADVISORY for dangerous crosswinds along I-90 from Livingston to Big Timber. Wind gusts could top 60 mph. High winds will blast across southwest Montana again on Tuesday with wind-prone areas such as Ennis seeing gusts over 50 mph while much of the region will see gusts over 40 mph. Places such as Bozeman and along the Missouri River will experience lesser wind gusts.

Another round of rain and snow will arrive Tuesday.  Areas of snowfall in the morning will be possible for areas west of the divide before a change to rain or a wintry mix in the afternoon. Highs will reach the 40s.  We are tracking a cold front that will change rain to all snow by Wednesday morning. Valley snow accumulations will be minor, with a dusting to an inch or so possible in most areas and between 1 and 3 inches in parts of Northwest Montana by Wednesday morning.

For the rest of the week expect scattered snow showers and colder temperatures. Highs through next weekend will only get up to around freezing with lows in the teens and single digits above zero. In other words, it will start feeling like winter again.
