Weather News

Winter Storm arrives Sunday

WINTER STORM WARNING 11 am Sunday to 11 am Monday for Lookout, Lolo, Lost Trail, and Marias passes along with Evaro Hill, the Swan Valley, and the West Glacier and East Glacier areas. All remaining areas west of the divide remain under a winter storm watch Sunday and Monday. Southwest Montana from Helena to Bozeman to Dillon are under a winter weather advisory starting Sunday morning.

Heavy snow will begin Sunday morning and continue through Sunday night. Passes under a winter storm warning will see between 10 and 14 inches of snow and will be very tough to travel over through at least midday Monday. Other passes could still see more than 6 inches of snow. Valleys under winter storm warnings will see between 5 and 8 inches of accumulation.

Many of the lower elevation valleys west of the divide will see a period of rainfall early Sunday before the rain turns to snow as a cold front passes over the area late Sunday. Icy roads topped with snow cover are a real concern and could lead to a hazardous commuting situtation early Monday. Northwest Montana valleys will see 3 to 6 inches of snow, the Missoula area valleys will see 2 to 3 inches, Butte will see 1 to 3 inches, and Bozeman and the rest of southwest Montana will see 2 to 4 inches.

An arctic cold front will follow in behind the snow Monday night into Tuesday. This will extend the windy weather expected on Sunday and cause subzero wind chill values of -10 or worse in many areas. It also may lead to a flash-freeze on area roadways, meaning another rough commute early Tuesday.

Highs will drop to the teens Monday and many areas will be in the single digits on Tuesday. Lows will start in the teens and single digits Monday and dip below zero in many areas Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning.

More snow is likely late next week.
