Weather News

Light snow tonight, bigger storm moves in Sunday ahead of arctic cold

Light snow will develop this evening in northwest Montana and track south through the night. Light snow could be falling in the early morning around places like Bozeman. Winter weather advisories are in place for northwest Montana and the Bitterroot and Sapphire Mountains. Accumulations will be minor, around an inch in most locations with only slightly higher amounts on passes. Morning lows will be in the upper 20s to upper teens.

Temperatures will warm this weekend with highs in the 30s and even a few low 40s. It will be breezy with a slight chance of rain and snow showers Saturday. Widespread rain and snow develops Saturday night into Sunday, with accumulations possible by evening. A WINTER STORM WATCH is in effect for Sunday and Monday with potentially hazardous travel conditions across our entire viewing area.

An arctic cold front will follow in behind the snow Monday night into Tuesday. This will extend the windy weather expected on Sunday and cause subzero wind chill values. It also may lead to wet roads freezing rapidly by Tuesday morning.

Highs will drop to the 20s Monday and the 10s by Tuesday. Lows in the 10s to lower 20s Monday, dropping to the single digits and low 10s by Tuesday. Butte will see lows drop below zero by Wednesday morning.

AVALANCHE WARNING: The Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center is issuing a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Bridger Range and northern Gallatin Range. Heavy snow has added weight and stress to weak and unstable snowpack. The avalanche danger is rated HIGH on all slopes. Natural and human triggered slides are likely today. Avalanche terrain and avalanche runout zones should be avoided.
