The Griz soccer team had a successful home tournament over this past weekend sweeping up victories over both Houston Baptist and Utah Valley to extend their unbeaten streak at home to 11 games.
On Tuesday one player was honored for her efforts in those two victories: Griz sophomore Mackenzie Akins earned the title of Big Sky Player of the Week.
She was an easy choice to win this honor for the first time in her career; Akins played a role in all four of Montana’s goals against the Huskies and Wolverines.
Akins assisted twice to Tyler Adair for goals, one in each game. She added one more assist against Utah Valley and then scored a goal of her own to put the Griz on top 3-0 in that game.
“It’s good recognition for Mackenzie, because she has been doing some great things for us,” Grizzly head coach Mark Plakorus told the Griz athletic department on Tuesday. “It was a good weekend for her and a really good weekend for us. Everything we do is about our team, so individual accolades are a reflection of the success we have as a team. If we don’t play as well as we did this past weekend, we don’t have a chance to get anybody recognized.”
Akins now has three assists and one goal on the young season, Montana will next be in action Friday on the road against Nebraska-Omaha.
