It has been a rough few days for the MSU Bobcats football team. First they fell to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday and then they really fell once the latest FCS polls were released with the University of Montana moving ahead of the Bobcats for the first time this season. But there was one bright spot that came out of the Bobcats game on Saturday.
Senior Tanner Bleskin set a new MSU record for receiving yards Saturday. He ended the day with 2,268 yards in his career, passing former Bobcats Chip Hobbs and Elvis Akpla. What made the record even more more special was that his brother Jake Bleskin was the one who threw the pass that got his record setting yardage so a very special moment for the Bleskin family.
Senior running back Cody Kirk knows something about setting records as he set the MSU record for rushing touchdowns in the Bobcats first game of the season. But Kirk knows Bleskin would rather have left Texas with a win than a record.
"It's exciting but at the same time I'm pretty sure Tanner probably had the same response I did," said Kirk. "It doesn't really matter. We're here to win and unfortunately we did not win. It's exciting for Tanner. We're the same age, me Tanner and DeNarius and it's cool to see that stuff happen. It'll be cool in ten years, but right now we're just focused on the task at hand."
Those words were then echoed by head coach Rob Ash once he took the microphone saying Tanner deserves this honor but knows he would rather have picked up the win Saturday.
"I think it you ask Tanner Bleskin or Jake what they'd like to have this past Saturday, it would be a win rather than a record," said Ash. "I'm happy for Tanner, he's earned it. He's been a fabulous competitor and a great leader and now a captain so if anybody deserves it it would be Tanner. It's cool that it came from Jake, but I don't think either one of them is thinking about that right now."
They are thinking about North Dakota as the team prepares for their third away game of the season. This time however, they hope to arrive home with their first road win of the year.
