UM's Ward done for season

MISSOULA, Mont. - A difficult task just got more difficult for the Griz basketball team as they try to win out and host the conference tournament; Mathias Ward is officially done for the year.

"We're not going to have Mathias, he's done.  He chose to have surgery this morning so he's done," said head coach Wayne Tinkle today.

Ward injured the arch of his foot February 16th against Idaho State and missed the past three games.  It was unknown until today whether he would suit up again for the Grizzlies this season.

Ward played in 118 career games at Montana with 55 starts.  He recorded 933 career points with 324 career rebounds.

Before getting hurt this season ward let the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game which was 5th best in the entire Big Sky Conference.

The Grizzlies squad swept both of their road opponents this past Saturday despite playing without Ward and without their senior point guard Will Cherry.

"Will we're hoping to get back, it's a matter of when," said Tinkle today of Cherry's absence.  "If you ask Will he wants to play tomorrow night.  But he's going to do a few things on the court today and see how he responds.  We're hoping that best-case scenario we have him for the tournament."
