Sentinel volleyball has eyes set on repeat

Sentinel volleyball has eyes set on...

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Sentinel volleyball team has been waiting for the chance to defend their state title. When the state tournament begins in Bozeman Thursday the Spartans finally get their opportunity.

After winning a state title a year ago this season for the Spartans is all about the repeat.

"Our goal from the very beginning was to win state," said senior Elsa Godwin.

For a team this talented it seems like that wouldn't be a difficult task to accomplish. When every team is gunning to take out the defending champs that is a different challenge.

"Everyone just wants to beat us, because we do have a target on our backs. We just have to make sure that every game we bring the same intensity that they are bringing," said senior Kylie Frohlich.

This season they took care of business. The Spartans only dropped one match en route to securing the No. 1 seed in the west for the Class AA State Tournament.

It is an experienced group that takes the floor each night for the Spartans.  The team’s 11 seniors with experience playing together is reflected in the win column.

"Having that many girls on a team and playing together for so long has been super beneficial.  We all have that trust and great chemistry, and we work really well together," said Godwin.

The Spartans’ regular-season success set them up now to be in a position to chase after another state championship. Now they have to go out there and take it.

"We just need to make sure that we are a united front. All one unit and bring everything we have," said fifth-year coach Erin Keffeler.

Beginning Thursday in Bozeman the opportunity to go back-to-back will finally present itself. Additionally, the team that Keffeler has seen grow up will play their match together.

"Love them to death -- they are a great group of girls. I could not be prouder," said Keffeler.

Regardless of the outcome these Spartans have left a strong legacy at Sentinel.
