MISSOULA, Mont. - Following his graduation from Gonzaga with a broadcast degree this spring, Kalispell native Ryan Edwards decided to forego his senior season of basketball. However, giving up hoops proved to be more difficult than he thought.
"I kind of missed it already and so I just wanted to give myself another opportunity to go play," said Edwards.
This week Edwards has officially signed on as a graduate transfer to play for Portland State. After averaging less than three minutes per game last season with the Zags, he's excited for the chance to be a major contributor in the Big Sky Conference.
"I've always liked Portland," said the former Glacier Wolfpack standout. "I like the city and one of the main reasons I came here is because Portland is a place I would like to be in my future, and also being able to play in the Big Sky Conference and go back to Montana to play is pretty cool."
"I think we're going to have a really solid team this year. We're really big and so I think definitely other conference teams are going to have a hard time stopping us down low, no doubt."
Despite leaving Gonzaga to finish his college hoops career, Edwards says being part of the Bulldogs program was an unforgettable experience.
"Oh man I'm so thankful and grateful for my opportunity there it's unbelievable. I wouldn't be the man or where I am today without Gonzaga. Gonzaga was my home for four years and will still always be my home, but this was just an opportunity for me to do something for myself."
When asked about his goals for the Vikings this season, Edwards makes it clear that he intends to make a name for himself.
"Man I'm trying to be conference player of the year. Trying to do it all. I want to go out and have a hell of a year."
At 7-foot-1, Edwards becomes the tallest player in Portland State basketball history.
