Florence coasts to another B-C state softball title

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Florence Falcons made history Saturday afternoon in Great Falls by taking down Conrad 10-3 and earning their third-straight state B-C softball title.

The Cowgirls got out in front early in the game with two runs in the top of the first,  but Florence responded by scoring four runs in their first at-bat to grab a two-run lead after one complete inning.  The Falcons would coast to victory after that, finishing with the 10-3 victory.

"It's so exciting," said Florence senior Stephanie Drozdz.  "Only one team gets to end with a win in the B-C tourney and to go out senior year with a win, I'm ecstatic... I'm on top of the world."

"I can't even describe how it feels," said Florence junior Megan Byrne.  "Three back-to-back championships, people don't even get a chance to get one. So to get three is so special and I'm so proud of my team for making it happen."

Byrne led the way for Florence in the championship bout with a pair of hits, including a double, for two RBI's. Byrne also started in the circle for the Falcons, pitching the first six innings to record the win, while Sarah Schurg pitched the final frame.

Florence entered the class B-C tournament as the #3 seed out of the West after suffering a rare loss last week to Mission in the divisional tournament.  The Falcons finished their season with an overall record of 27-2; the divisional loss to Mission was the only defeat Florence suffered to a B-C team this season.

The only nail-biter that Florence had during the state tourney was a 6-5 victory over Conrad in the unbeaten semifinals on Friday afternoon.  Overall the Falcons outscored their opponents 40-15 at the state tournament in Great Falls.

The Faclons will lose four seniors to graduation but will return many starters next spring and should be expected to contend for another title.
