Robin Selvig joins 800 club
Lady Griz head basketball coach Robin Selvig joined elite company Monday night in Missoula when he recorded his 800th career win at Montana.
It was not the prettiest win the Lady Griz have ever had, but in the end UM beat Portland 68-61 inside Dahlberg Arena.
During the first half of the game the Lady Griz shot just 25 percent from the field, including 1 for 12 from three-point range. But midway through the second half Montana went on a 16-2 run and UM was able to hold off Portland.
Torry Hill and Kellie Cole both had a team high 16 points in Monday's contest. Lady Griz freshman Alycia Sims had a big night off the bench scoring 13 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and went 7-of-7 from the charity line.
Selvig becomes just the sixth active coach in NCAA Division I women's basketball to reach 800 victories.
"It really isn't something you think about," said Selvig of his achievement on Tuesday. "I'm glad we've got a lot of wins and I'm glad we won last night. A bunch of former Lady Griz were there last night and these current ones and you know I really think it's a neat deal if a whole bunch of people feel a part of that because they are and something you get just yourself isn't all that meaningful if you don't get to share it with a whole bunch of people."
The win also helped the Lady Griz improve to 2-0 on the year. The next test for Montana will be a road game at Denver Wednesday, Nov. 27.
