It was a great weekend for the Lady Griz basketball team and yet another huge weekend for junior guard Kellie Cole.
For already the second time this season the Bozeman native has been named Big Sky Conference Player of the Week for her efforts.
In Montana's Thursday win over Eastern Washington Cole registered 22 points and seven rebounds. Then on Saturday against Portland State Cole scored 23 points despite only playing 23 total minutes in the blowout game which Montana won by 36 points over the Vikings.
Between the two games Cole shot 67-percent from the floor to average 22.5 points per game with 6 rebounds per game. Cole also made 6-of-7 shots from 3-point range in the contests.
Since league play started Cole is leading the Big Sky Conference with over 22 points per game, and 63-percent shooting from the floor. Heading into this past weekend's games, Montana had coach Robin Selvig said it's been no surprise to see Cole start conference play so hot on the offensive end.
"Kellie gets down to the hole and scores, she shot the three well in recent games, she can create her own shots a little bit, and she's good in the post," said Selvig. "So because she's a versatile scorer I think that's what enables her to do that kind of scoring."
"Well it's kind of nice because last year if you made a mistake you would usually get taken out and this year there's a little more leeway," said Cole last week before recording two more monster performances. "You're more free to make plays and not worry about making mistakes, and I think that definitely helps."
The next test for Montana will be a pair of road games starting with North Dakota Thursday, Jan. 16, followed by Northern Colorado Saturday, Jan. 18.
