Montana's High School Ruggers Play English Counterparts
POSTED: 9:58 pm MDT September 1, 2010UPDATED: 10:14 pm MDT September 1, 2010When it comes to the sport of rugby, there are a few places in the world that stand above the others. In recent years, Missoula has had a taste of this when they welcomed teams from New Zealand and Australia for Maggotfest. But, those were adults. Today, Montana's best high school ruggers experienced international rugby when the Southwell high school club from Nottinghamshire England came to town. The match took place at South Campus Fields earlier this evening as part of the English team's 2010 USA tour. The Southwell team is known as Anstey's Army, and most of the players have been playing since pre-school.On the other hand, most of the Montana guys have just a few years of rugby experience. As expected, the English boys defeated Montana handily in the match. But, the Treasure State ruggers were satisfied with the opportunity to play and promote their sport.“They've been playing since they're like little kids, so they know the game a lot better than all of us do,” says Dylan Crouse, a flanker for the Montana team. “It will have a big influence. Kids will come out and watch it and think it's a good sport. They'll want to try it out and then their buddies will want to try it out and it'll just keep going from there, building up.”The English team toured the National Bison Range on Tuesday as part of their visit. On Thursday, they'll be treated to a float down the Alberton gorge before continuing their rugby tour of the country.
