GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

The wife of a man shot and killed in what authorities say was a dispute over land access has filed a wrongful death complaint in civil court.

The Great Falls Tribune reports (http://gftrib.com/19kCzcV) in a story on Sunday that Jackie Newman of Great Falls filed the civil complaint in Lewis and Clark County against 67-year-old Joseph Campbell.

Authorities are still investigating the Oct. 18 shooting about 20 miles southwest of Augusta that left 53-year-old Timothy B. Newman of Great Falls dead.

No criminal charges have been filed.

The civil suit contends that Campbell negligently caused Timothy Newman's death and that Campbell is liable for wrongful death and survivorship damages.

Campbell's attorney says the shooting was a "tragic situation" but that Campbell acted in self-defense. Authorities say both men were armed.
