WOODS BAY, Mont. -

Captains and coaches of dragon boat teams took to the water Saturday for a lesson from the pros as a prep for the Montana Dragon Boat Festival in September.

Eighty area paddlers hopped into the 46-foot-long boats to learn everything from proper paddle technique to paddling to the beat of a drum. Kevin Kwan, a veteran dragon boat racer and trainer from Edmonton, Alberta came to the Flathead to train these leaders before the fall event.

"The people that volunteered to captain or coach, giving them a little bit of education, giving them a little bit of support so they can continue to do what they're doing," said Kwan. "Getting everyone out, motivating them. Whether it's for fun, for a workout, for strategy, for the sport. So its really just giving them the tools so they can go forward and do that."

Captains will continue to train their teams until the festival which kicks off September 7th at the Flathead Lake Lodge.
