'Woodys' steal the show at antique boat gathering

Boat enthusiasts from all over the Northwest showed off their antique wooden boats at the second annual Whitefish Woody Weekend. The Big Sky chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society puts on the gathering to highlight the rich history of wooden boats on Whitefish Lake.

Organizers say boating there dates back to the turn of the century. Folks would stay at hotels that dotted the shoreline and boat to dance halls on the north end of the lake.

"There's a lot of good reasons to love this hobby," said Tim Salt. "The boats are beautiful, they're works of art. The craftsmanship, artistic flare. But for me it's the people. If you got something wrong with your boat there's someone here who can help you figure it out or fix it. It's just a great fellowship of people."

The club will host a second show, the Big Sky Boat Show, in early August on Flathead Lake.
