Montana wildfire updates for Sept. 19, 2017

MISSOULA, Mont. - Several waves of moisture will keep us locked in a pattern of valley rain and mountain snow through Friday. The Butte area will see the rain change to snow today and Wednesday.

Rice Ridge Fire (Seeley Lake)

  • Location: 2 miles northeast of Seeley Lake
  • Size: 160,181 acres
  • Containment: 61 percent
  • Structures Threatened: 1719
  • All evacuation warnings have been lifted.

Lolo Peak Fire (Lolo)

  • Location: 10 miles southwest of Lolo
  • Size: 53,881 acres
  • Containment: 87 percent
  • No evacuation orders or warnings and are currently in place
  • Closures: Closure orders are in effect for portions of the Bitterroot, Lolo and Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests.
  • Returning Home: Residents may see changes to their property as a result of firefighting operations. Check your property for damage to your well/pump, electric/gas meter, propane tank and for fire-weakened trees.
  • A staffed fire information trailer and bulletin board is located at Super One Foods in Stevensville. The Florence information center has closed. Fire information is also available at the weigh station in Lolo at the corner of Highways 12 and 93.
  • Stage II Fire Restrictions are in effect for Missoula and Ravalli Counties and across the Lolo and Bitterroot National Forests. Additional information can be found on Inciweb.

Highway 200 Complex

  • Location: northwest of Plains
  • Size: 47,118 acres
  • Containment - 18 percent
  • Evacuations and Closures: According to the Sanders County Sheriff's Office, all evacuation notices for the Highway 200 Complex fires have been lifted. All areas in the evacuation and pre-evacuation area are all now considered under pre-evacuation notice until otherwise notified by the sheriff's office. 
  • The Forest Service, Sanders County, and DNRC have placed area closures around the fires as they are integral to public safety and safe fire operations. Although areas around the fires have been closed, the majority of lands in the area are still open for all types of activities.

Gibralter Ridge Fire (Eureka)

  • Location: East of Eureka
  • Size: 12,938 acres
  • Containment: 27 percent
  • Structures threatened: 144
  • Evacuations: None
  • Road Closure: Grave Creek Road and the Ten Lakes Recreation area are closed above the Grave Creek/Foothills Road junction.

Caribou Fire

  • Location: 21 miles northwest of Eureka
  • Size: 24,753 acres
  • Containment: 50 percent
  • Structures: unknown number destroyed
  • Evacuations: None
  • 10 homes and 30 outbuildings is the unofficial number of structures that have been lost in the Caribou Fire, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff.

Alice Creek Fire

  • Location: near Lincoln, MT
  • Size: 29,252 acres
  • Containment: 80 percent
  • Structures: 4 confirmed lost
  • Evacuations: None
  • Road closures are still in effect on these roads: Alice Creek Road, Copper Creek Road at the Landers Fork Road junction, and McDonough Road. 
  • The Helena – Lewis & Clark Forest Area Closure order for the Alice Creek Fire remains in effect while Forest officials evaluate the potential for adjusting the closure area.

Sunrise Fire (Superior)

  • Location: 11 miles southeast of Superior
  • Size: 26,310 acres
  • Containment: 95 percent
  • An area closure remains in effect on the Lolo National Forest where fireline repairs are underway northwest of Trout Creek.
  • Evacuations: A Stage II Evacuation, a precautionary measure, notice remains in place for the Quartz Creek.
  • The Forest Service area closure remains in place on the Lolo National Forest as well as Stage II Fire Restrictions.

Sapphire Complex Fire (Rock Creek)

  • Location: 25 miles southeast of Missoula
  • Size: 43,733 acres
  • Containment: 90 percent
  • Evacuations: All evacuation orders and warnings have been lifted.
  • Meyers and Sapphire Complex/Little Hogback Fire Closures are lifted as of noon Sept. 19, 2017. Road and trail closures for the Hogback Fire are rescinded as of noon, Sept. 19, 2017. 
  • Fire Restrictions: Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in place on the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest (Forest Service land east of Sandstone Ridge). Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in place on BLM, private and state lands in Granite County, and the Lolo National Forest (Forest Service land west of Sandstone Ridge).

Meyers Fire (Philipsburg)

  • Location: 25 miles southwest of Philipsburg
  • Size: 62,034 acres
  • Containment: 90 percent
  • Meyers and Sapphire Complex/Little Hogback Fire Closures are lifted as of noon Sept. 19, 2017. Road and trail closures for the Hogback Fire are rescinded as of noon, Sep. 19, 2017. 

Sprague Fire (Glacier National Park)

  • Location: 9 miles northeast of West Glacier, MT
  • Size: 16,790 acres 
  • Containment: 47 percent
  • Three large fires are currently burning in Glacier National Park: the Sprague Fire, Adair Peak Fire is burning at 4,034 acres and the Elder Creek Fire is 2,547 acres. 
  • Lake McDonald Lodge closed for the season on Aug. 30 due to air quality concerns. 
  • Closures: MOST areas of the park remain OPEN: The Going-to-the-Sun Road from Saint Mary to Logan Pass, Two Medicine, Many Glacier, and Apgar are currently open.
  • Evacuations: An evacuation ORDER remains in place from the south end of Lake McDonald north to Logan Pass. This includes the North McDonald Road. The duration of the evacuation is unknown at this time.
  • Sprinklers and water handling equipment remain in place around the Lake McDonald Lodge complex and will be utilized as needed. Pumps and hose lay systems have been installed in the Avalanche Creek Campground, Trail of the Cedars area and North McDonald Lake area. The Wheeler Cabin and Mount Brown Lookout are wrapped. Crews will continue structure protection planning in Apgar Village.
  • Shelter: the Red Cross shelter for Sprague evacuees is located at Canyon Elementary School, 200 North Street, in Hungry Horse.

West Fork Fire and Moose Peak Fire (Libby)

  • Location: 7 miles northwest of Libby
  • Size: West Fork - 20,008 acres / Moose Peak - 13,854 acres
  • Containment: 48 percent, 26 percent
  • All evacuation orders lifted as of 9 a.m. on Sept. 19.
  • The following pre-evacuation warnings are also in place:
    • Bobtail Road from Kootenai River Road to below Hutton Drive
    • Bobtail Cutoff Road
    • Winter Road
    • Whitetail Road
    • Indian Pipe Road
    • Bull Creek Road
    • Burrell Drive
    • Kootenai River Road, from Quartz Mountain Road to the end of Kootenai River Road (Bighorn Terrace)
    • North side of Kootenai River Road from North Central Road to Quartz Mountain Road
    • Pipe Creek Road from Forest Way and north
    • Forest Way
    • Lodge Pole Way
    • Doak Creek Road
    • Blue Mountain Lookout Road
    • Creekside Road
    • Timber Lane
    • Quartz Mountain Road
    • Lower Bobtail, including Burrell and Indian Pipe
    • NORTH side of Kootenai River Road from North Central to Quartz Creek
    • Kootenai River Road from Quarts Creek to end of Bighorn Terrace

  • Please, only emergency and local resident vehicle traffic in the areas of Bobtail and Bobtail Cutoff, Pipe Creek and Kootenai River Road.
  • Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in effect within the Kootenai National Forest, State and Private Lands, as well as Lincoln and Sanders County.

Liberty Fire (Arlee)

  • Location: 17 miles southeast of Arlee
  • Size: 28,689 acres
  • Containment: 95 percent
