MISSOULA, Mont. -

Democratic U.S. House candidate John Lewis met with Missoula rural firefighters as they toured last year's Lolo creek fire complex. At one time that fire was the nation's top priority.

Fire crews talked about mitigation and this year's fire outlook.

Lewis' visit focused on workforce, training and education.

“I'm highlighting some of the areas that are paying the biggest price and first responders today. We're going to visit with some workforce development programs, students at schools that depend on funding to improve Montana, to create jobs," said Lewis.

Lewis told NBC Montana he's headed to Butte next to talk with small business owners.
