Tribal members stop megaload traveling on US 12
NEZ PERCE COUNTY
Nez Perce Tribal members have stopped a massive shipment of oil refinery equipment from continuing its journey to Canada along U.S. Highway 12 in Idaho.
The Lewiston Tribune reports that loud shouting, drumming and whoops rang out as the oversized shipment ground to a halt at about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday.
Idaho State Police troopers were on the scene.
The state issued a permit last week allowing Omega Morgan to begin hauling two giant water purification units to an oil sands project in Alberta, Canada, despite fresh objections from federal forest managers and tribal leaders.
Nez Perce Tribal Chairman Silas Whitman said Monday night that collaboration and diplomacy have failed and tribal members would intercept the loads at the reservation line because the tribe is "tired of being pushed."
