MISSOULA, Mont. -

A Montana teacher who has made exceptional contributions to broadening the global horizons of students received a new honor Monday night.

Education Policy Director to the Governor Shannon O'Brien presented Geoffry Habel with the first annual Global Educator of the Year award tonight in Missoula.

The award is given to a teacher who promotes international understanding.

Habel won the award for his work as a social studies teacher for 18 years at Great Falls High School.

Upon received the award, Habel told the audience, "One of the most important things I have learned about teaching kids is that kids will care if you know that they know that you care first.  I've learned that I can't force an important event or issue on students, but I sure can do my best to help them understand why these events matter."

The World Affairs Council of Montana sponsors the new award, which includes $250 for international education resources.
