MISSOULA, Mont. -

A recent string of burglaries east of Missoula has law enforcement officials searching for a thief.

The burglaries were reported on the 9000-block of Highway 10, west of Turah and just a few miles from Bonner.

Officials tell us they have received five reports so far of home break-ins and attempted breaks-ins in that area.

The first report was made Mother's Day night when a couple heard someone trying to break into their house.

NBC Montana was in Turah today knocking on doors and we ran into one couple who told us they had two snowboards taken out of their garage Monday night.  They tell us they still have to report the items stolen but it has them worried.

Some other items taken include purses, a laptop, cameras, cash and credit cards.

We spoke with Paige Pavalone, with the Missoula Sheriff's Department.  She tells us it's not uncommon for folks in rural areas to leave their houses and cars unlocked but she says that's not a good idea.

“People get complacent and they think that because they're in an isolated neighborhood that they're safe but you never know your house could be being scoped,” said Pavalone.  “Always keep your windows locked, lock your doors before you go to bed -- even if you're in the house it's a good idea to lock your doors because like what happened on Mother's Day evening the suspect would have tried to come into the house as the people were inside getting ready to go to bed."

If you have any information regarding the burglaries you are urged to call Five Valley Crimestoppers at (406) 721-4444.
