Sixteen National Guard soldiers from eight states are taking part next week in a competition in the Black Hills of western South Dakota.

The Region 6 Best Warrior Competition will include two soldiers each from South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Male and female soldiers will compete in various events designed to challenge their skills and toughness.

Events Monday through Wednesday will include written exams, battle drills, shooting tests, land navigation, an obstacle course, a 6-mile road march and a physical fitness test.

Winners of the region's soldier and non-commissioned officers of the year will advance to national competition at Camp Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas, in July.
