Emergency crews evacuated a three-block area near downtown Stevensville at about 5 p.m. Wednesday.
People were out of their homes for about 3 hours in the area of Church Street between 4th and 5th Streets. Stevensville Mayor Gene Mim Mack tells NBC Montana that's where a contracting crew working on a water main ruptured a gas line.
Emergency and NorthWestern Energy crews responded immediately and brought in equipment from Missoula. They shut the gas and electricity down, repaired the gas line and have restored service.
The evacuation affected about 25 residents. Residents are allowed back in their homes.
