NBC Montana has been working with our colleagues in Seattle to bring you the latest developments in the story about a 3-year-old Washington state boy who may have been killed by his own father.
Our affiliate caught up with a shirt-tail relative of the Cramer family, Ed West, who says Broderick Cramer’s father took him everywhere and the family appeared to be very close. West says he never saw this coming.
“It's a devastating thing,” said West. “You don't know who to feel sorriest for -- the boy in the field and the dad in jail or the mom suffering.”
West stands on his porch and remembers his relatives. He talks about a boy nicknamed Brody who he says was always close to his father.
“He took his son with him all the time on trips,” said West.
Now Jeremy Cramer is in jail facing deliberate homicide charges.
West says he can't believe it but points to possible warning signs -- Cramer apparently invited his wife, Natalie, to take a drive with him on the day that he took his son and left Washington heading for Montana.
"She said no, she had stuff to do,” said West. “Then he took the boy and left, just for a drive.”
But West says Cramer left without packing Brody any extra clothes -- he was just wearing the pajamas he had on that day.
Our colleagues caught up with neighbors who say they are shocked.
“There was nothing suspicious. He was just a normal family guy doing yard work quite a bit,” said neighbor Abdul Khan.
Khan says three days before Cramer left, he was working in his yard and laughing.
West says Cramer wasn't working a regular job and other sources indicated money was tight.
“He was going to start a business but he hasn't done it yet,” said West.
“It is really, really surprising to hear that, if something has happened to this family and this guy has done that,” said Khan.
Family friends say Brody's mother has taken down all of his pictures because it's too heartbreaking to look at them.
Now at the Cramer home in Lacey, Wash., toys are all that's left of the little boy who lived there.
Brody would have been 4-years-old next Tuesday, July 16.
We will continue to follow this story and bring you the latest details as we learn more.
