MISSOULA, Mont. -

Power is out in parts of Missoula and many communities in the Bitterroot Valley.

Northwestern Energy tells NBC Montana that swaths of Missoula, including the South Hills and Farviews neighborhoods are without power.

Spokesman Butch Larcombe went on to say that the major problem is extending southward into the Bitterroot Valley. He says crews are working to respond to calls in the Hamilton area and in Victor, Darby, Stevensville and Corvallis.

Larcome points out that power lines are down in all of those areas and trees and branches are across power lines.

Northwestern Energy warns residents never to approach a downed line or tree but to immediately call 888-467-2669.

Larcombe says crews are doing their best to respond to calls and do not know yet how many are without power or how long it will take to restore electricity.
