GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

A 35-year-old Poplar man has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for intentionally striking and killing a man with his sport utility vehicle in September 2012.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen sentenced David Elmer Muskrat on Thursday in Great Falls.

Muskrat pleaded guilty in June to second-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Reuben Blackdog.

Prosecutors said Muskrat was driving around Poplar last Sept. 1 and told more than one person he was looking for Blackdog and intended to kill him. Prosecutors say when Muskrat spotted Blackdog, he accelerated his SUV and ran over the man before driving away.
