MISSOULA, Mont. -

The paintings of 17 artists from this week's "plein air" or "open air" paintout are hanging in the Dana Gallery in downtown Missoula.

The paintout attracted artists from all over the west.

Plein air artists work quickly on location to take advantage of natural conditions.

Much of the work is spontaneous, putting paint on canvas before the light changes, or the wind switches direction.

Artists painted landscapes in the Missoula area, and in the Bitterroot Valley.

"When you come in and look at all of this work," said the gallery's assistant manager, Kate Dineen, "you may recognize a spot that you pass every day and you will see it in an entirely different way. It's pretty neat to look at this work and see your home."
