BOISE, Idaho -

Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter named a northcentral Idaho building official as a new commissioner in Clearwater County.

John W. Smith was tabbed by the Republican governor on Friday to fill the Clearwater County vacancy left by the resignation of Commissioner Stan Leach.

Leach took a job with the state as a logging safety official.

Otter says Smith's 11 years of experience with the Lewiston Community Development Department Building Division make him well qualified to serve residents of Clearwater County.

Smith also served previously as a sheriff's deputy in Clearwater County.

Smith and his wife Carolyn have been married for 26 years and have two children.

The Clearwater County seat is in Orofino.
