'Original Nightmare' promises to deliver a fright
SILVER BOW COUNTY
Halloween is less than a week away, and if you are looking for scare, look no farther than Uptown Butte.
Volunteers have put hundreds of hours of work into making the Original Nightmare one of the spookiest haunted houses in town. When the lights go out, you won't have any idea what's lurking in the shadows of the Original Mine Yard.
"It's not your typical haunted house," said Butte High School art teacher Michael Kujawa.
Kujawa gave NBC Montana a tour of the haunted house Friday afternoon as they were finishing up last minute details.
"It's interactive with the characters within it," he explained. "You'll see scenes out of movies and scenes we've created."
Kujawa runs the Butte High Art Club. He explained 104 art students helped a local special affects artist create props, costumes, and displays to create the creepy world.
"I imagine out of the 104 students who've worked on it, they've probably put in 8 hours each, so it's a lot of man hours to create this site," Kujawa said.
Rachel Carroll, who graduated from Butte High in 2013, is one of the volunteers.
"I'm going to be the autopsy doctor," she explained, "so basically I'll be dressed as a dead doctor playing with guts."
Rachel graduated from Butte High last year, but came back this year to help.
"I think Butte needs a lot more artistically-themed things," she said.
She said this haunted house is important to Butte.
"Basically all that goes on in this town is trick-or-treating and the haunted house is the spot to be," Carroll said.
"We really do want to make it a site for Butte and to show off the mine yard, and to get everyone a chance to go through it and enjoy it," he said.
The Original Nightmare costs $5 to get in. The proceeds will be donated to five local charities, as well as the Butte High Art Club's annual "Art Trek," where students travel to Portland and Seattle to check out the local art scenes.
The haunted house runs Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 11 pm., and Halloween night from 7 until midnight, at the Original Mine Yard.
