1982: National Football League players begin a 57-day strike. The strike, which ended on Nov. 16, 1982, would end up shortening the season from 16 games to nine. The new five-year agreement eventually ratified provided severance packages to players upon retirement, an increase in salaries and post-season pay, and bonuses based on the number of years of experience in the league.
