1963: Baseball player Mark McGwire, who broke Roger Maris' single-season home run record of 61 when he hit 70 during the 1998 season, is born in Pomona, California. McGwire, seen here in 2011 as the hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, compiled a career total of 583 home runs between 1986 and 2001 playing for the Oakland Athletics and the Cardinals. In 2010, McGwire publicly admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs during a large portion of his career.
