1942: Rock and heavy metal singer-songwriter Ronnie James Dio, best known for his work with Black Sabbath and his own band Dio, is born Ronald James Padavona in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Dio, seen here in 2007, was also known for his powerful singing voice and for popularizing the "metal horns" hand gesture in heavy metal. He died of stomach cancer at the age of 67 on May 16, 2010.
