BILLINGS, Mont. -

Yellowstone County officials have released the name of the sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a man who had escaped from the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge.

Sheriff Mike Linder says Lt. Shane Skillen, a 17-year veteran, was placed on administrative leave after the shooting Friday in Billings.

Linder says a shooting review board will look at the circumstances surrounding the shooting of 42-year-old Dean Randolph Jess. A coroner's inquest also will be held.

Jess escaped from the prison on Monday morning and was shot Friday afternoon during a standoff on the west end of Billings.

Linder said Jess had a handgun and refused to get out of a stolen vehicle when surrounded by officers. Officers say the shooting happened when Jess moved the gun toward a deputy.
