New home construction market stands strong across Bozeman
New data from the U.S. Census shows construction of new homes dipped around 10%.
Permits for single family homes rose for the third straight month.
We dug into Montana's numbers and the most recent we found were from May. In the Flathead, Kalispell reported 45 permits in 2013, that is up from 16 over the same period in 2012. Permits in Missoula jumped from 40 to 52.
Bozeman has seen 194 new construction permits issued this year, which is up from 101 through May of last year.
Dennis Steinhauer owns Archer Construction and told NBC Montana his business tanked back in 2008, when the housing market crashed. Steinhauer is now back to building and busy. He is putting up homes for clients who want more activity around them.
"Our buyer is generally someone that wants downtown for the walk-ability. It's more of a lifestyle decision for them," said Steinhauer.
He is working on an infill project, excavating land where he will build two small homes for clients on the same property. The land is just blocks away from Main Street in Bozeman.
"Locally there seems to be a strong market for people that want a smaller home that's easier to maintain, leaving more time for recreating," said Steinhauer.
NBC Montana also talked to contractor Matt Madden. He told us construction in Bozeman has taken off significantly in the past month.
"This year it went from zero to 60 in one month," said Madden.
Madden told us the biggest issue right now is finding employees to work, now that the housing industry is back up and running.
"I've been trying to hire. I Interviewed a few people, offered a job to one person -- there's a lot of competition out there."
Contractors tell us a similar issue they have encountered was getting their lumber delivered on time.
NBC Montana was able to confirm permit numbers for June late Wednesday afternoon. We learned June's numbers dropped slightly from May, but Bozeman is up significantly year over year.
