BUTTE, Mont. -

Montana Tech is closer to renovating and reopening their pool.

The school shut the pool down to the public two years ago.

At the time, it was leaking more than 1500 gallons of water per day. Also, the facility isn't up to current safety or environmental standards.

Renovations and repairs are expected to cost around $500,000.

Tech said having a new facility is a selling point for prospective students.

Montana Tech HPER Complex Director Nick Bowsher said, "the entire lining needs to be replaced and the aluminum shell underneath has been compromised and that's where the water going. Those are the two major factors in renovating the pool."

Work on the six-lane, 25-meter pool will begin this summer. Tech hopes it will be ready by next January. During the renovation, students have access to the Butte YMCA.
