The following information is the evening update on the Miner Paradise Complex from Inciweb:

Sheep Fire in Tom Miner Basin, North Eightmile and Horsetail Fires along Gallatin Crest, Emigrant Fire – 8 miles south of Emigrant

Emigrant Fire: Currently only has one evacuation to the south.

No evacuations are in place along the north boundary or in the Chico area. Additional Closures will be in effect for Tom Miner and Emigrant Fires. Closure maps on Inciweb.

Combined Current Size: Approximately 8,112 acres, 4 fires Containment: 5%

Sheep Fire: Approximately 499 acres, North Eightmile Fire: Approximately 271 acres,

Horsetail Fire: Approximately 134 acres, Emigrant Fire: Approximately 7,208 acres.

Resources Assigned: The Miner Paradise Complex includes: Emigrant, North Eightmile, Horsetail, and Sheep Fires. Additional resources have been requested. Total personnel: 319

FIRE NAME: Sheep Fire

DATE OF DETECTION: August 12, 2013

CAUSE: Lightning

CURRENT SIZE: approximately 499 acres


LOCATION: Sawtooth Mountain in Tom Miner Basin, approximately 25 miles northwest of Gardiner

AGENCY: Gallatin National Forest

PERSONNEL AND RESOURCES ON THE FIRE: 2 20 person crews, 8 engines, 1 Skidsteer, 1 Tender

TUESDAY’S ACTIVITY: Fire is burned up to rock ridge on northern boundary. Fire crews continued to build more direct handline to hold the fire out of Horse Creek. East flank spotting is being held with bucket drops. Firefighters firmed up a contingency line from Division A to Division Z along the northern section of the fire and heavy air support was utilized to drop water on the fire. Fuel break with a dozer line wrapping around to the north and west to protect private lands and DNRC lands. Roll outs are causing some small fires along northeast perimeter.

WEDNESDAY’S PLANNED ACTIVITY: Fire personnel will continue to use heavy equipment and crews will construct direct and indirect handline and mechanized line north along Horse Creek. This will wrap the west boundary of the fire to protect private landowner and DNRC lands. Check lines will be implemented in Division Z

CLOSURES & OTHER INFORMATION: Tom Miner Basin Closure: on Tuesday a Closure Order in the Tom Miner Basin will be implemented on National Forest System Lands affected by the Sheep Fire along the southern portion of the Tom Miner Basin which will include the Tom Miner Campground. Map will be made available on Inciweb.
