GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

A Dearborn Canyon man suspected of shooting and killing a neighbor in an ongoing property dispute is claiming self-defense.

Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton has not released the name of the shooter, but says he's a 67-year-old man who lives in the area where the shooting occurred. Timothy Newman of Great Falls died shortly after noon on Friday.

Dutton says because the alleged shooter claimed self-defense, state law requires law enforcement to prove it wasn't before making an arrest.

Dutton tells the Great Falls Tribune the man has been cooperative and he has no reason to believe he is a flight risk.

He says he expects the sheriff's office to wrap up its investigation in a couple of days.
