BUTTE, Mont. -

Jeff Lefever, the owner of two horses in Butte, said he's surprised and saddened after a lightning strike killed the horses Sunday night.

Snickers, one of the Lefevers' horses, was left unharmed during the Sunday night storm.

Lefever told NBC Montana he and his wife are still dealing with the shock.

He explained he found his horse, Cowboy, dead Monday morning, and another, Digger, so badly injured that it had to be put down.

The vets that treated Cowboy and Digger called it a freak accident, and said there wasn't much that could have been done to protect the horses from the strike.
