Hackers in Butte credit union cyber attack claim ISIS affiliation

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Southwest Montana Community Federal Credit Union was the target of a cyber attack Saturday by hackers claiming to be affiliated with ISIS.

The hack left the credit union's website with a black ISIS flag on the front page and the words, "hacked by ISIS, we are everywhere."

Credit union officials say the attack was limited to the front page of the website, and that no accounts were compromised.

Union CEO Tom Dedman told NBC Montana in an email that the website has been taken down so an IT security specialist can investigate.

Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester says his office is in the process of contacting the FBI.

Lester says he's doubtful the attack originated overseas, with the Islamic State.

"I don't think ISIS agents would be interested in a hack like this," said Lester. "I think this is more likely a domestic hacker rather than international cyber terrorism."

The credit union has branches in Anaconda and Butte.

An investigation into the attack is ongoing.
