Group of Montana gun owners support more extensive background checks

BOZEMAN, Mont. - A group of gun owners in Bozeman gathered on Saturday to discuss gun safety and hold a handgun practice shoot.

The people we spoke to at the event support a nationwide coalition called Mayors Against Illegal Guns. It is a group that advocates for more extensive background checks.

People we spoke to say they believe in the right to bear arms, but want more background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. They also want to prevent illegal gun ownership.

"When a person has a gun lawfully, that they need to be absolutely careful with it, that's the most important message from today," said Scott Swanson.

"The main thrust of this group is to encourage legislators to vote for expanded background checks for gun owners to keep illegal guns, and illegal people from having illegal guns," said Susan Nichols-Roughton.

According to the Mayors Against Illegal Guns website, Montana has three mayors who are part of the coalition. They include the mayors of Bozeman, Belgrade and Missoula.
