DEER LODGE, Mont. - Charging documents obtained by NBC Montana show Dennis Schowengerdt faces one count of deliberate homicide in connection with the stabbing of his wife Tina.
We went to Deer Lodge to learn more about the couple and spoke with Tina's friends and Powell County Sheriff Scott Howard.
Howard tells us his deputies have shown up at the couple's home on Yellowstone Trail several times, called by neighbors or in some cases Tina herself.
Friends of Tina's we spoke with shared memories of her, about how she helped the community and was a pleasure to be around.
Theresa Hunt know her; she says, "She did a lot of volunteer stuff. She's very sweet and I really liked coming down here and visiting with Tina, mainly because she made you feel comfortable. It is very shocking to hear what happened."
From what we've been able to piece together Tina's life at home wasn't easy.
We asked another friend, Loren Mollenberg, if there were any warning signs.
"Yes and no, I can tell you that. It is a shock. You wouldn't know it by looking at Tina, but she did live with a lot, and that was part of it."
Sheriff Howard says Tina had asked for help from churches and domestic violence shelters several times, and that the couple had separated but were living in the same house.
Dennis Schowengerdt is due back in court on December 18.
