Butte-Silver Bow Coroner identifies shooting victim

BUTTE, Mont. - One of two men considered a "person of interest" in a Butte shooting death has surrendered to authorities.

Police in Butte say 36-year-old Vernon Maddock turned himself in on Tuesday afternoon. He was jailed for missing a court date on an unrelated drug charge on Monday.

Maddock and 24-year-old Jeffrey Lackman were being sought for questioning after a 46-year-old man was shot in the head late Monday night during an argument outside a residence.

Coroner Lee LaBreche tells The Montana Standard the victim was Mark Partelow of Butte.

Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester says Partelow appeared to have been shot with a large caliber handgun. No weapon was found.

Officials have said they believe there are witnesses to the shooting who left before police arrived.
