Butte sends proposal to be manufacturing hub

BUTTE, Mont. - Butte leaders told us the city sent in its official bid to become one of 15 manufacturing innovation centers in the country.

"I think we remain optimistic that what we put together is going to be impressive enough to gain us one of those twelve designations," said Chief Executive Matt Vincent.

Vincent said the elaborate proposal focused on developing natural resources, oil and gas refining and non-metal mining

Vincent said if accepted, Butte-Silver Bow would get a preference on some government funding opportunities.

Out of 70 applicants, Vincent said Butte-Silver Bow's proposal is the only one from Montana and, if chosen, would be a central hub for the Northwest.

In 2012, a pilot manufacturing hub was created in Youngstown, Ohio, that focuses on 3D printing. It has nearly 100 members, including manufacturers, universities, and nonprofits working on more than 20 research projects.
