Butte police turn over counterfeit money case to Secret Service

BUTTE, Mont. - Butte police tell NBC Montana the Secret Service in Missoula is taking over the investigation of counterfeit money circulating through the Mining City.

Officials said First Citizens Bank found two fake $100 bills deposited by two different businesses -- the Flying J and Propane Services Incorporated.

This comes just one week after other fake $100 bills were supposedly passed at Walmart, Safeway and Albertsons.

Police said the bills look extremely real and even passed the marker test.

Officials said they believe all the bills are linked and came a Butte man, who claims he got them from his girlfriend in Nigeria whom he met over the internet.

The man was reportedly using the bills to buy moneygrams to send back to her, police believe the man fell victim to an internet scam.
