BUTTE, Mont. - Jefferson County authorities said a body discovered on Homestake Pass has been taken to the state crime lab in Missoula for identification.
A hiker discovered the body Sunday afternoon in a remote area about 3/4 of a mile south off the Homestake Pass exit off Interstate 90.
Jefferson County Undersheriff Mike Johnson is releasing few details about the body discovered Sunday afternoon.
"A hiker had located a body on the south side of the Homestake interchange," said Johnson.
Johnson says the body was in a remote area and not near a trail. Multiple agencies responded to recover the remains.
"One of the deputies who responded as deputy coroner," said Johnson. "And there was Jefferson Valley Search and Rescue and Forest Service responded to the area."
According to Johnson, the body had been exposed to the elements and was not immediately identifiable.
"Transported to the crime lab for identification," said Johnson.
Johnson said until he gets results, he won't release any more information on the body.
"There is a missing person in that area, but we're not tying them together until we properly identified the body," he said.
Missing Butte man Jim Ryan disappeared almost four months ago. Ryan's work vehicle was found at a trailhead about a half-mile north of the interstate. The day he disappeared he was scheduled to meet with his bosses in Helena about $175,000 dollars that went missing
Johnson said right now the main focus is finding out whose body was in the woods off Homestake Pass, and how they died.
"And once we know that we can look into the medical history of the person and what was going on with the person in that time of their life to put things together whether it was a foul play or natural death," said Johnson.
Johnson said it's unclear when the results from the crime lab will come back.
