BOZEMAN, Mont. - An avalanche killed a snowmobiler late Wednesday afternoon south of Bozeman. According to Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin three snowmobilers were in the Portal Creek area when they became caught in the slide.
The sheriff says a man in his 40s was buried. Other members of the party suffered minor injuries. Crews were not able to recover the man's body Wednesday evening.
Search and rescue crews will use a helicopter to access the area and try to recover the man's body on Thursday. The victim's identity has not been released.
Avalanche danger in that area was between "considerable" and "high" in the Northern Gallatin and Northern Madison ranges on Wednesday.
