Woman pleads guilty to misdemeanor charge in crash that killed teen

Driver pleads guilty to misdemeanor in teen's death (5/9/13)

MISSOULA, Mont. - The Missoula driver accused of running over and killing a teenager pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of Careless Driving Resulting in Death in Missoula Municipal Court Thursday.

Investigators say the woman, Yoon Hee Cho, drove her vehicle up onto a sidewalk and struck Hellgate High School senior Chance Geery while he was walking in April.

Investigators said that Cho, a University of Montana Associate Professor, was distracted, but had not been texting, drinking or speeding. Prosecutors decided to file only misdemeanor charges for Careless Driving and Driving on a Sidewalk.

According to court documents, the charge carries a 6 month jail sentence, with all but 30 days suspended, which Cho will serve under house arrest.

Cho is also required to pay a $5,000 fine, which she may receive dollar-for-dollar credit towards for any contribution she makes toward the Chance Geery memorial scholarship fund.
