At 8:40pm on Sunday, May 11, Missoula Rural Fire District (MRFD) received a call for service for a structure fire and a female not breathing in the 6000 block of Mullan Road. MRFD responded with 2 engines, a water tender, a ladder truck and a Battalion Chief. Upon arrival of the first engine, they found light smoke showing from a single story home and outside of the home, bystanders were performing CPR on a female patient. The first arriving Firefighter/EMT's immediately took over medical care of the patient and the next arriving engine company extinguished the remaining fire. A total of 12 Firefighter/EMT's were on scene to render medical aid and fight the blaze.
MRFD was assisted by Missoula Emergency Services (MESI) and Missoula County Sheriff's Office (MCSO).
Unfortunately, despite the heroic efforts of the bystanders, MRFD Firefighter/EMT's and MESI personnel, the female patient succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital. 3 other civilians from the scene were transported to the hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation.
The MRFD Fire Investigation Team was on scene to determine the cause of the fire. Initial indications point to cigarette smoking materials as the cause of the fire.
