Veterans Stand Down event held in Hamilton

HAMILTON, Mont. - Saturday is day two of the Veterans Stand Down in Hamilton. Friday's turnout was extremely poor, and organizers are hoping for more people on Saturday.

Veterans are encouraged to come out for a little R and R.

There's free food supplied by the Elks, as well as entertainment. It's a community effort to help all vets and their families, especially those with financial need.

Veterans services will be available. Surplus survival gear is available for homeless veterans.

"Duffle bags, sleeping bag systems, blankets," said organizer Eric Wells, "a few clothes depending on what size, and boots."

He said the Veterans Administration has tightened purse strings. Wells said the gear is only available to the homeless. He said if a vet is close to homeless, and is living in a motel, for instance, he or she would not be eligible.

Wells is urging all veterans to show up at Saturday's Stand Down.

It's from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Ravalli County Fairgrounds in Hamilton.
