MISSOULA, Mont. - The Sanders County Sheriff's Department says a grandmother and two grandchildren are missing after their car reportedly crashed into the Clark Fork River near Plains.
Sheriff Tom Rummell say a 911 caller spotted the vehicle around 5 p.m. Friday bob up and sink below the surface of the river about 13 miles west of town on River Road.
Rummell said search and rescuers were called in shortly after. A flyover of the area yielded no results.
Divers from the Flathead County Sheriff's dive team drove down on Saturday morning and resumed the search, but they were still unable to locate the car.
Rummell says the area of the river where they believe the car sank is only 6 to 8 feet deep, but swift and murky water is reportedly complicating efforts.
The missing people have been identified as 63-year-old Kathy Legard, 13-year-old Jake Legard, and 4-year-old Payten Yoder.
Rummell said he and his department's prayers go out to the missing people and their families.
Divers will resume the search Sunday morning.
