Residents, students respond to latest Missoula College location proposal

MISSOULA, Mont. - There's new reaction after the University of Montana identified a possible second location for a new Missoula College campus.

The administration is looking at 7 acres along East Broadway, near UM's Technology Enterprise Center. Currently, the site is mostly a parking lot, but cross the Clark Fork River, and you're on the main campus.

Some are worried the 2,500 college students would create more traffic for residents heading to and from East Missoula.

But while that's controversial, the move would subdue hard feelings over developing UM's golf course.

"I think this (the East Broadway site)  would be a great location because it separates the school a little bit from the town," said UM student Danielle Ross.

"As a Missoulian," said Missoula College student Kate Nittinger, "I really appreciate the open space of the golf course, so it seems like a good compromise."

But East Missoula resident Robert Fritz doesn't think so.

"It's too much risk," he said. He drives the area to work all the time. And he said the traffic and the danger 2,500 students would bring to the road, aren't good.

Missoula College student Nathan Hansen favors either the East Broadway or golf course location. "I would like an educational center," he said. "I would like to see everything together."
