New York firefighters help battle Montana wildland blazes

MISSOULA, Mont. - Montana fires have been getting attention from around the nation. And Montana's getting help from around the country.

Firefighters have been in the Missoula area for a week now.

The 20-person Type 2 initial attack team was on the Lolo Creek Complex late Monday morning.

Mid-morning found the team well rested and keeping busy sharpening shovels and maintaining a vehicle.

"We're kind of waiting right now for the recon flight," said team leader Bill Meehan, "looking for any smokes. If they need a hand, they'll call us, and we'll come."

Meehan said Montana's beautiful.

"You hate to see it burn, he said, "and that's why we love to come out and give you a hand."
